Maricao was without power for 6 months after the Hurricane and currently experiences daily power outages. Puerto Rico has the second highest electricity rate in the United States (after Hawaii). Rural communities deserve a renewable energy system that does justice and that can serve as a tool for sustainable economic development for this small, mountain town.

Maricao was awarded an initial grant from IREC for 75kW of solar panels and will be leading the design of the system. With more grant support and funding we can scale the system to cover a greater portion of Maricao.

Monte Azul launched Maricao Verde 2027, an initiative to move towards 100% renewable energy by 2027 through rapid expansion of the microgrid and helping the most isolated residents adopt residential solar.
